Metallurgical Test Work – Murray Basin Ilmenites

Initial economic analysis of the Murray Basin ilmenites assumed that such ilmenite, or a major proportion, would not have an economic value.

Metallurgical work by Iluka has indicated that Murray Basin ilmenites can be fractionated into a sulphate and chloride fraction. It is possible to sell the sulphate ilmenite fraction and use the chloride ilmenite fraction as a feedstock for a synthetic rutile production. Dependent on pricing levels of ilmenite and sustained markets for synthetic rutile, future Murray Basin resource to reserve optimisation may well include a value for the ilmenite.
